UNITED NATIONS  NEW YORK, 21 June 2022 – Ambassador Enrique A. Manalo, together with the officers and staff of the Philippine Mission to the United Nations and the Philippine Consulate General, celebrated the 124th Independence Day of the Philippines with a traditional flag raising ceremony along Fifth Avenue in New York on 12 June 2022.

The flag raising ceremony was followed by a short program that includes the pledge of allegiance to the Philippine flag and the reading of the messages of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte and Secretary of Foreign Affairs Teodoro L. Locsin, Jr.

“Let our rich history move us to translate our love for this country into real acts of goodwill for all our fellow men,” said Ambassador Manalo as he read President Duterte’s message for the Filipino people with a theme, “Pagsuong sa hamon ng panibagong bukas (Rise to the challenge of a new tomorrow).” President Duterte also urged the Filipino people to work together to realize the vision for a more harmonious and more progressive Philippines.

As the country commemorated the anniversary of the 124th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine Independence, the Philippine Congress had proclaimed on 25 May 2020 the 17th President of the Philippines, President-elect Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.

“The sovereign will of the Filipino people through free, fair, and unrestricted elections – an extension of our national independence – found its fullest expression and produced a clear and incontestable winner…This enables us to set the vision of the “new tomorrow” we will all be working for,” said Consul General Elmer Cato as he read the message of Secretary Locsin.

Ambassador Manalo also led the Philippine Mission to the United Nations in the annual Independence Day Parade with the Filipino community on 5 June 2022 along Madison Avenue from 38th to 27th Street. With New York rolling back pandemic restrictions, the annual Independence Day Parade took place after two years of cancellation due to the pandemic.
