PH Embassy in Dhaka National Day Diplomatic Reception and Celebration of 50th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations with Bangladesh

Dhaka 22 June 2022 — Philippine Embassy in Dhaka hosted a diplomatic reception and cultural night on 18 June 2022 to jointly commemorate the 124th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine Independence and the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Bangladesh.

The event was attended by an estimated 200 guests, with officials from Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ambassadors from the diplomatic corps, business representatives, officials from international organizations such as JICA, NGOs such as Action Aid, members of the media, and prominent members of the Filipino community. It was the first time that all the ASEAN Heads of Mission were together in one event in the last two years.

Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary Mr. Masud Bin Momen served as the Chief Guest during the event. In his keynote speech, FS Momen highlighted that the Philippines was among the first to recognize Bangladesh as an independent nation on 24 February 1972. He also pointed out Bangladesh’s keenness to have a cooperation with the Philippines in agro-processing and technology, training and skills transfer in nursing and health technology, connectivity, IT and in the BPO industry.

Philippine Embassy in Dhaka Alan L. Deniega highlighted in his opening remarks the Filipinos’ resilience in overcoming hardships in order to uphold the nation’s sovereignty and to achieve peace and prosperity, as well as the potential areas of cooperation with Bangladesh such as the areas of disaster management and rural development with the use of ICT, which are low-hanging fruits that can benefit the people in the grassroots and the marginalized. The possibility of a free trade agreement between the Philippines and Bangladesh was also mentioned.

The cultural presentations during the event were performed by the Filipino community in Bangladesh (all three organizations) and by Philippine Embassy personnel, to showcase the richness of Filipino dances and songs. The undersigned also performed a song in Bangladeshi language. END
