ATHENS, 26 June 2023 - The Philippine Embassy in Athens hosted a diplomatic reception in celebration of the 125th Anniversary of Philippine Independence and Nationhood, with the theme: Kalayaan, Kinabukasan at Kasaysayan", on Tuesday, 13 June 2023 at Divani Caravel Hotel.
The event was well attended with guests from the diplomatic corps, officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Embassy friends as well as executives from the business sector particularly the shipping, finance and property sectors. The celebration started with the singing of the Philippine National Anthem and the National Anthem of the Hellenic Republic by Athens-based Filipinos Ms. Eunice Manigbas. and Mr. Anthony Kier Carbonel, respectively.
In his Independence Day message, Philippine Ambassador to Greece Giovanni Palec recalled the struggle for an independent Philippines and how the sacrifices of our forefathers paved the way for our democratic way of life today. He also explained the symbols of the Philippine flag after he mentioned that this was first unfolded in 1898 when General Emilio Aguinaldo proclaimed the Philippine independence from Spain.
After the speech, Ambassador Palec was joined by Heads of the ASEAN missions in Athens, H. E. Bebeb A.K. Nugraha Djundjunan of Indonesia, H.E. Le Hong Truong of Vietnam, and Mr. Pornsith Pibulnakarintr, Charge d' Affaires, a.i. of Thailand in cutting the Philippine flag designed cake made by Mrs. Novelyn Palec.
Guests were entertained by Mr. Anthony Kier Carbone!, Ms. Eune MAnigbas and Ms.Kirsten Arada, also a Filipino singer based in Athens. END
