TRIPOLI 26 June 2023 –– The Philippine Embassy in Tripoli, in commemoration of the 125th anniversary of the declaration of Philippine independence, hosted a reception on 09 June 2023, in Benghazi. It was attended by officials from key Embassy partners and members of the Filipino community.

The reception drew attention to the contribution of Filipino workers, mostly nurses, who stayed in Libya despite difficult conditions. The highlight of the reception was a tribute video, a montage, that featured the vibrant Filipino community since 2011.

Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Maria Susana Ople graced the reception with a recorded message where she paid tribute to the Filipino nurses that remained in Libya despite difficult conditions. The Secretary also expressed readiness to conduct dialogues with the Filipino workers and announced that DMW is sending a team to check on the welfare of Filipino workers in Libya.

Close to 150 Filipino workers and dependents attended the event with some traveling three to four hours by land to participate in the first Philippine Independence Day reception in Benghazi after many years. END
