MADRID 07 June 2024 – As part of the month-long celebration of the Philippine Independence day and the Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day, the Philippine Embassy, in collaboration with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) presents the “Flamenco con Filipino Flair” event, featuring an amazing performance of two of the Philippines´ most prominent artists who have excelled in the intricate world of flamenco – maestro flamenco guitarist, Mr. Adolfo Timuat and the talented flamenco dancer Ms. Jameela Perez, who gave a great performance on 02 June 2024 to the delight of the audience at the Centro de Filipinas.

The event aims to highlight our very own Filipino artists who have made their important contribution in promoting flamenco to embrace our host country and Spain's performing arts legacy, and to put forward and highlight the Filipino charm and touch to this beautiful and passionate music and dance.

Ms. Emma Estrada, founder of Fundacion Centro Flamenco in Manila, also gave a great performance, as well as Mr. Ricardo Timuat, grandson of Mr. Adolfo Timuat.

Ms. Jameela Perez.  She started dancing flamenco as the youngest professional soloist at 9 years old as a protégé of Guillermo Gomez-Rivera. At 11 years old, she became a scholar of Sofia Zobel to pursue ballet, jazz and contemporary dance. While being a European Languages major at the University of the Philippines, she became a scholar of Emma Estrada at Fundacion Centro Flamenco. She then studied law at the Ateneo de Manila School of law while being a Spanish teacher at Brent International School, where she was inspired by her students to start her own dance school, Flamenco Filipinas. She moved to Spain to pursue a Master's degree at the Universidad de Alcala de Henares and to attend master classes in flamenco at the Amor de Dios Madrid.

Her long-time vision is to continue to practice and spread flamenco culture in the Philippines and to support unprivileged but talented Filipino dance scholars in the future, the way that her generous mentors have supported her and the art of flamenco.

Mr. Adolfo Timuat, on the other hand, is of Filipino and Japanese descent and has been a much sought-after flamenco guitarist, not only in Spain but around Europe and Southeast Asia. He is recognized by guitar masters as “guitarista de concierto, compositor, profesor e investigador”. He set up his own guitar shops in Madrid and Cebu and a guitar-building school in Malaysia.  He studied with the greatest flamenco guitarist and builders such as Sabicas, Juan Maya Marote, Arcangel Fernandez, Joaquin Cortes, and Rafael Riqueni. He earned his Master's degree in Classical Guitar for the Real Conservatorio Superior de Musica de Madrid and the title “Luthier of Stringed Instruments for Castilla La Mancha”.

To top it all, Mr. Adolfo Timuat has performed solo concerts around the world - in the glorious venue of the Carnegie Hall, and twice at the Lincoln Center in New York. END
