LISBON 10 June 2024 – The Philippine Embassy in Portugal held a Diplomatic Reception on 06 June 2024 at the Altis Grand Hotel in Lisbon in commemoration of the 126th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence.
In his Welcome Remarks, Philippine Ambassador to Portugal, Paul Raymund P. Cortes, emphasized the essential role of diplomacy in ensuring that bilateral relations between countries are committed to the welfare of the people. “What is important at the end of the day is our people who will stand to benefit from our programs. Public policy, including that of foreign policy, is after all for the public, for the people, and not for the select few,” he stated.
Ambassador Cortes also encouraged members of the Filipino community to be shining examples of Philippine culture and heritage, continuing the legacy of millions of overseas FIlipinos in showcasing the rich cultural identity of the Filipino people.
The highlight of the diplomatic reception was a 30-minute fashion show entitled Mindanao Tapestry II by renowned Filipino designer Reneé Salud. Guests were captivated by an exquisite display of clothing that celebrated the intricate craftsmanship and artistry of Mindanao's indigenous communities. Models showcased a range of modern clothing reflecting the unique patterns, colors, and designs emblematic of the Mindanao region.
The Philippine Embassy aimed to promote awareness of the country's weaving heritage and textiles industries through this feature, highlighting the ingenuity of local weavers from Mindanao and preserving the long-standing tradition that supports the livelihood of these communities.
To complete their cultural experience, guests enjoyed traditional Filipino cuisine, featuring popular dishes such as adobo, laing, and lumpiang sariwa, as well as delectable desserts like cassava.
The reception was attended by more than 200 guests, including Portuguese officials, Heads of Diplomatic Missions, members of the diplomatic corps, leaders and representatives of the business community, academia, media entities, and members of the Filipino community in Portugal. END
