PH Embassy in Canberra Hosts Commemoration of PH Independence Day and Birth Anniversary of Rizal
Ambassador De La Vega and the Filipino community in Canberra held a flag-raising ceremony on 08 June in commemoration of Philippine Independence Day.
CANBERRA 13 June 2024 – Philippine Ambassador Ma. Hellen De La Vega led the Filipino community in Canberra in a flag-raising ceremony to commemorate the 126th anniversary of the independence of the Philippines and a wreath-laying ceremony to observe the 163rd birth anniversary of national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal on 08 June at the Embassy grounds.
The Filipino cadets at the Australian Defence Force Academy hoisted the flag of the Philippines and the officers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines who are pursuing post-graduate studies in Canberra participated in the program.
In her remarks, Ambassador De La Vega said, “Inspired by the sacrifices of our forefathers and their vision for the Philippines, let us continue to contribute meaningfully to nation-building and forge new paths that will uplift the Filipino identity.” The video message of Secretary for Foreign Affairs Enrique Manalo on the occasion of Independence Day was shared with the guests while Consul General Aian Caringal led the message of Secretary for Migrant Workers Hans Leo Cacdac.
Sir Norman Kalagayan, Chapter Head, Knight Commander of Rizal in Canberra, and Lady Marlene Tucker, President of Kababaihang Rizalista Inc Canberra Chapter, spoke of the significant lessons from Rizal’s life that remain relevant today. Mr. Kalagayan shared Rizal’s work in health care, education and community-building while in exile in Dapitan while Ms. Tucker talked about Rizal’s love for his country as demonstrated in his many written works.
The Filipino community in Canberra continues to grow with the establishment of several professional and advocacy organizations in the last five years. This is paving the way for Filipino flavors, products and dishes to be introduced in dining options and shops in the city. The morning event was capped off with Filipino brunch of chicken mami (Filipino chicken noodles) and putok (Filipino star bread) with kapeng barako (Batangas coffee) and hot calamansi tea. END
Members of Kababaihang Rizalista Inc offered flowers at the bust of Jose Rizal at the Embassy grounds.
Ambassador De La Vega hosted the Filipino community at the Official Residence in observance of the 126th anniversary of the declaration of the Independence of the Philippines.
