BUENOS AIRES 19 June 2024 – On 12 June 2024, the Philippine Embassy in Buenos Aires celebrated the 126th anniversary of Philippine Independence with a successful diplomatic reception at the Sheraton Hotel in Buenos Aires with a special performance by Argentine tenor Flavio Fumaneri. Over a hundred guests from the diplomatic corps, government, private sector and the academe were in attendance.

Ambassador Grace T. Cruz-Fabella, who delivered her remarks in Spanish, highlighted the positive trajectory of Philippine-Argentine relations, the robust Philippine economy and its high growth potential, and the country’s contributions to peace and efforts in building bridges with other nations. She highlighted the Philippines’ role as partner, pathfinder and peacekeeper in connection with the Philippines’ bid for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for 2027-2028.

“Interconnected as we are, it is of utmost importance that we play our part in maintaining peace within our region through bilateral and trilateral partnerships with our like-minded allies, through the ASEAN and other regional arrangements, and in the global community at large through the United Nations,” Ambassador Grace T. Cruz-Fabella emphasized.

Speaking on behalf of the Argentine Foreign Ministry, Undersecretary for Foreign Policy Marcia Levaggi focused on the recent developments in bilateral relations, such as the official visits of Secretary for Foreign Affairs Enrique Manalo and Secretary of Science and Technology Renato Solidum to Argentina and the visit of then Undersecretary for Foreign Policy Claudio Rozencwaig to Manila in 2023, as well as promising developments in bilateral cooperation in human rights, peaceful uses of nuclear technology, and between diplomatic academies.

To close the program, Argentine tenor Flavio Leandro Fumaneri gave a stirring rendition of Zamboanga Hermosa, a Filipino song written in the Spanish-based Filipino dialect chavacano. He also sang El Dia Que Me Quieras, a famous song by Carlos Gardel (the father of tango) and O Sole Mio, a classic Italian opera song. Fumaneri is in his third year of lyric training at the Instituto Superior de Artes del Teatro Colon (ISATC) under Teatro Colon, one of the top opera houses in the world. END
