SHANGHAI 21 June 2024 – Heeding the Bagong Pilipinas call for unity among Filipinos, close to 20 Filipino organizations in the Chinese financial capital and nearby provinces bonded over sports and friendly competition in a meaningful activity commemorating the 126th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence on 16 June 2024 at the GBA Sports Center in Pudong District.
Conceptualized and hosted by the umbrella organization Filipino Community in Shanghai (FILCOMSHA), the “Bayanihan Sports Fiesta: Celebrating Freedom and Unity” had five teams competing in badminton, basketball, and volleyball during the day-long activity. The teams also showed their energy and creativity via a cheering competition.
Officials of the Philippine Country Team in Shanghai, consisting of the Consulate General, Philippine Trade and Investment Center, and Department of Tourism Office, gamely took part in the day’s colorful and exciting program.
Philippine Consul General to Shanghai Dinno M. Oblena delivered his speech on the occasion, highlighting what this year’s theme of “Kalayaan. Kinabukasan. Kasaysayan.” encapsulates, as well as mentioning the fine traits of the Filipino and Philippine culture that have brought the community together for the event. He then read the Independence Day message of President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr.
FILCOMSHA President Michelle Teope-Shen delivered her remarks to open the event.
Further adding to the Filipino flavor of the festivities, a Filipino vendor market took place parallel to the event, selling Philippine dishes, delicacies, and other items.
The event closed with the awarding of prizes to winners in the sports competitions as well as for best muse and best in cheering. END
