Philippine Embassy in Abuja Hosts 126th Philippine Independence Day Reception
ABUJA 24 June 2024 - On 19 June 2024, the Philippine Embassy in Abuja, Federal Republic of Nigeria, hosted the 126th Philippine Independence Day reception at The Ballroom, Fraser Suites Abuja, Nigeria.
The event was attended by more than 300 guests including Nigerian government officials, members of the diplomatic and consular corps in Nigeria, representatives of the business sector and the Filipino community in Nigeria.
In his remarks, Philippine Ambassador to Nigeria H.E. Mersole J. Mellejor gave an overview of Philippine-Nigerian relations and proposed a way forward taking into account the huge potential of both countries with a combined population of around 345 million. Ambassador Mellejor also made a strong pitch to members of the diplomatic corps in attendance to support the Philippines’ candidature for a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council for the term 2027-2028 at elections to be held in June 2024.
The occasion provided an opportunity for Abuja PE to promote investment opportunities in the Philippines as well as the country’s products and popular attractions and tourist destinations.
The reception was highlighted by a ceremonial cutting of a cake decorated with a mirror image of the Philippine flag and showcased performances and popular Filipino cuisine. END
