05 January 2018 MEXICO — The Philippine Embassy´s officers and staff commemorated the 121st anniversary of the martyrdom of Philippine national hero Dr. Jose Rizal with a simple floral offering on 30 December 2017 at the monument of Dr. Rizal in Mexico City.
The statue of Dr. Rizal in Mexico City is one of the biggest statues outside the Philippines. It was put up on the occasion of the Philippine Independence Day in 1967.
In his letters, Dr. Rizal frequently mentioned the successful Mexican independence movement against Spain as proof that colonized peoples were not inferior to people from the European powers, and should forge their own destiny.
The famous Spanish philosopher and academician, Miguel de Unamono, compared Dr. Jose Rizal with Mexican President Benito Juaréz and spoke of both men as sterling examples of the glory of Hispanic culture and letters. END
