PH Embassy in Germany commemorates 125th anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal’s martyrdom
BERLIN, 31 December 2021 – Philippine Embassy in Berlin’s Acting Head of Post, Minister and Consul Gerardo P. Abiog, led the Embassy in a wreath-offering ceremony on 29 December 2021 to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal and to celebrate his life.
Rizal was an expatriate in the German capital from November 1886 to May 1887 and referred to Germany as his “scientific mother country.” He spent time in Charitè Hospital honing his medical expertise and immersed himself in other intellectual pursuits, such as reading academic works on the Philippines, exchanging views with German scholars.
Berlin, the capital, is where Dr. Rizal’s most pivotal literary work, “Noli Me Tangere”, first came off the press, eventually paving the way for Filipinos’ pursuit of independence from Spain. END
