GENEVA, 30 December 2021 – The Permanent Mission of the Philippines recalled Dr. Jose Rizal’s quest for knowledge and truth which brought him to Geneva, Switzerland, during a commemorative ceremony to mark the 125th anniversary of the martyrdom of the national hero.

Ambassador Evan P. Garcia led the Permanent Mission’s commemorative ceremony, in solidarity with millions of Filipinos around the world who are also marking the occasion.

Minister and Consul General Felipe F. Cariño III cited Dr. Jose Rizal’s contributions and aspirations for knowledge as a means for Filipinos to liberate themselves against injustice and oppression, and empower themselves with science and the truth in crisis situations, which resonates in this year’s theme “Rizal: For Science, Truth, Life” (“Rizal: Para sa Agham, Katotohanan, at Buhay”).

Vice-Consul Jet Olfato recounted the historical friendship between the Philippines and Switzerland, through Dr. Jose Rizal who visited the country on 02-23 June 1887. During the Geneva leg of his travels across Europe, Dr. Jose Rizal stayed at the Pension Bel-Air in Rue du Rhône 3, where a plaque was unveiled in 2010.

Minister and Consul Ma. Elena Cristina D. Maningat closed the event with a reading of Dr. Jose Rizal’s poem “Education Gives Luster to the Motherland”. END
