PHNOM PENH, 05 January 2023 – In commemoration of the 126th anniversary of the martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal, the Philippine Embassy in Cambodia and Sentro Rizal Phnom Penh joined the nation’s celebration on 30 December 2022 at the Embassy grounds, and witnessed by representatives from the Filipino community in Phnom Penh, namely Samahan ng mga Pilipino sa Cambodia (SAMAPI), Teachers’ Learning Action Guild in Cambodia (TLAGC), Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Business Associations in Cambodia (PhilCham), and Cordillerans in Cambodia (CiC).

The short program commenced with the singing of the Philippine national anthem, followed by remarks by Ms. Frances Louissa C. Cleofas, Chargé d’affaires, a.i., floral offering on the bust of Dr. Rizal, recital of Dr. Rizal’s poem entitled “To The Philippines”, and simple salo-salo.

Bearing in mind this year’s theme “Rizal: Preserved Memories Treasured Today by the Nation” (Rizal: Alaalang Iningatan, Yaman Ngayon ng Bayan), CDA Cleofas emphasized the lessons learned from Dr. Rizal’s life and works, such as fervent love for country, preservation of the Philippine native language, significance of education and importance of youth in nation-building, among other remarkable traits, which overseas Filipinos could emulate being informal representatives of the Philippines to the world.

The Embassy also invites everyone to watch a short film entitled “Jose Rizal: Sa Landas ng Paglaya”, a short film commissioned by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) and provided by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), via the Embassy’s official Facebook page – PHL in Cambodia.
