GENEVA, 05 January 2023 – The Filipino community paid tribute to Philippine national hero Dr. Jose Rizal’s historic trip to Geneva and Lausanne, during a ceremony to mark the 126th anniversary of Rizal’s martyrdom held at the Permanent Mission of the Philippines to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Geneva, Switzerland on 30 December 2022.

During the event, Philippine Consul General Felipe Cariño III urged Filipino community members to remember and to be inspired by Rizal’s journey of learning and self-discovery throughout Europe and Switzerland, including in Geneva and Lausanne. “Much like Rizal, we are called to embrace discourse, be open to opinions and new ideas, and eventually move to sacrifice for the sake of others.“

Consul General Cariño’s reminder is in line with this year’s Rizal Day theme “Rizal: Preserved Memories Treasured Today by the Nation. “Through enduring memories and deep appreciation of Rizal’s legacies, Filipinos should be challenged to preserve their national identity and love of country, Consul General Cariño urged.

Rizal’s visit to Geneva in June 1882 is immortalized through a commemorative marker in Rue du Rhone 3. END
