BUENOS AIRES, 07 January 2023 – As Filipinos around the world gathered to commemorate the 126th anniversary of the martyrdom of Philippine national hero Dr. Jose Rizal, the Sentro Rizal - Buenos Aires held a special screening of the film “Rizal sa Dapitan,” for the Filipino community in Argentina following the traditional wreath- laying ceremony in front of the national hero’s bust.
The 1997 film Rizal sa Dapitan is an intimate portrait of the hero during his exile in the city of Dapitan, offering glimpses into various aspects of his life and his lasting legacy to the town. The award-winning film was directed by Amable “Tikoy” Aguiluz based on the screenplay by Pete Lacaba. In 1998, it won the FAMAS award for Best Film, Best Director, Best Story, Best Screenplay, and Best Production Design.
In his remarks, Chargé d’affaires, ad interim, Jason J. A. Anasarias noted that although Dr. Rizal had not been to Argentina in his travels, he is linked to the country through doctor and sculptor Felix Pardo de Tavera (brother of Trinidad). Pardo de Tavera married an Argentinian woman and migrated to Argentina, where he became a well- known sculptor. Rizal and Pardo de Tavera were contemporaries of the Propaganda Movement and corresponded with each other via letters.
The film screening was made with the permission and support of Director Aguiluz and its distributor, Viva films. END
