PH Consulate General, Filipino-Americans in Los Angeles County Commemorate the 127th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of Dr. Jose P. Rizal

LOS ANGELES 05 January 2024 – The Philippine Consulate General in Los Angeles (PCG LA) held a short morning program prior to the start of its Consular service for the last working day of the year, 29 December 2023, to commemorate the 127th anniversary of Dr. José Rizal’s martyrdom.
Consul General Edgar B. Badajos welcomed and thanked everyone for participating in the solemn occasion. In keeping with this year’s theme of “José Rizal: Pundasyon ng Kahapon, Isinasabuhay Ngayon,” Consul General Badajos focused on Rizal’s attributes, such as love of country, pursuit of excellence and the belief in equality, social justice and peace, which Filipinos can emulate to contribute to nation-building. He encouraged everyone to remember their Filipino heritage and to help their kababayans even while they are also dedicating their skills and expertise for the benefit of their host country.
PCG LA also screened a short video titled “José Rizal: Sa Landas ng Paglaya” for clients to watch. This video was produced by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines and is widely available in Youtube.
Besides Post’s official program commemorating the martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal, Consulate officials also attended parallel commemorative activities organized by Filipino community organizations in various parts of Los Angeles.
One such commemorative activity was a wreath-laying ceremony organized by various Fil-am groups in the City of Carson in the morning of 31 December 2023. Attended by Consul General Edgar Badajos, the wreath-laying ceremony was held at the foot of a life-size monument of Dr Rizal located inside Carson City’s activity was organized by the Knights of Rizal-Los Angeles Chapter and it was held before a bust of Dr Rizal that was installed at the back of the community hall of the Filipino American Community of Los Angeles or FACLA, the oldest Fil-am organization in Southern California, in LA’s Historic Filipino Town.
