PHL Efforts in Achieving Gender Equality Highlighted in Women's Day Seminar in Paris

PARIS WOMEN 1

12 March 2018 PARIS – The French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs organized the Séminaire sur la place de la femme dans le région Asie Oceanie (Seminar on the place of women in Asia and Oceania) held at the l’Ecole nationale d’administration (ENA) in Paris. The seminar highlighted the efforts of the Philippines in achieving gender equality. Philippines' 10th place ranking in the World Economic Forum Gender Gap Report 2017 shows that the Filipina is better off than her French and Asian counterparts.

Anne Garrigue, author of the book Êttre Femme in Asie (2017), led the panel composed of ambassadors and entrepreneurs. Citing her book, Ms. Garrigue mentioned the Philippines’ achievements in pursuing gender equality and women empowerment. This is significant since the Filipino women have been playing an active role in the region’s migration and development.

Filipina designer/entrepreneur Jeanne-Marie Chan of Hedone Roman, spoke on entrepreneurship in the Philippines and said that while it is a challenging field, it is “gender-free wherever you are and there are no glass ceilings.” Chan pointed out that “it is not uncommon for women in the Philippines to hold positions of power and responsibility in the public or private sector whilst managing the domestic household.” END
