03 August 2016 – To end his tour of duty, Philippine Ambassador to Papua New Guinea Bienvenido V. Tejano formally bade farewell to Papua New Guinea Governor-General Sir Michael Ogio on July 13.

“We have known each other a long time and we have developed a strong relationship and friendship,” Governor-General Ogio said to Ambassador Tejano during the latter’s call.

“I would very much like to work with you again,” Governor General Ogio added.  He further expressed his interest in visiting the Philippines in the future.

In a heartfelt moment, the Governor General addressed Ambassador Tejano, “You may be leaving but in our hearts, you are not really leaving and this is not goodbye.”

Ambassador Tejano thanked Governor-General Ogio for a meaningful stay in Papua New Guinea and the opportunity to strengthen the relationship between the Philippines and Papua New Guinea.

The Ambassador cited the gains accomplished during his term including the increase in flights between Port Moresby and Manila to nine flights per week and the more robust people to people and business-to-business engagements between the two countries.

“The Philippines has become the preferred destination of Papua New Guineans for medical services, education, and tourism,” the Ambassador said.

He also added that Papua New Guinea is fast becoming a second home to an increasing number of Filipinos, with current population of over 30,000.

“Truly, the Filipinos have a heart for Papua New Guinea,” Governor-General Ogio warmly expressed, noting that “Filipinos in Papua New Guinea have generously shared their talents, knowledge, and technology to our citizens.”

He also commended Ambassador Tejano for his outstanding performance as Philippine Ambassador.

“Among all the Ambassadors I’ve known, you stand out for doing so well for the Philippines and Papua New Guinea and for your tremendous contributions to both our countries and peoples,” Governor-General Ogio said.

Ambassador Tejano and Governor-General Ogio discussed at length the need to further enhance the relationship between the Philippines and Papua New Guinea in the areas of agriculture, trade, and investment. Both expressed hope for a future where beneficial cooperation in these areas will be pursued or expanded.

“In whatever capacity, I will be most willing to serve my country and at the same time, support the development goals of Papua New Guinea,” Ambassador Tejano said. He also noted that there are opportunities to enhance the air services and tourism between the two countries.

Mr. Tipo Vuatha, the Official Secretary to the Governor-General of Papua New Guinea, and Philippine Third Secretary and Vice Consul Shiena Escoto-Tesorero attended the farewell call. END
