16 August 2016 – The Philippine Embassy in Cairo, in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Egypt, recently organized a Women’s Health Day for Filipinas in Egypt.

The group focused on the importance of regular breast and cervical screening.

IOM doctors who were present during the event discussed the causes of both breast and cervical cancer and the importance of their early detection.

The IOM recommended that women over 50 years old must get regular mammograms. All women are encouraged to routinely conduct breast self-examinations.

In order to pin down cervical cancer at its early stages, women were also encouraged to undergo a pap smear every two years.

The doctors also provided an overview of hepatitis, or the general inflammation of the liver. While not strictly a women’s health concern, hepatitis C is particularly widespread in Egypt, with prevalence rates among the highest in the world.

The IOM emphasized good hygiene practices, such as handwashing and the proper use and disposal of needles and other sharp implements, in preventing the spread of hepatitis.

Attendees were given referrals for free mammograms and pap smears after a needs-based assessment conducted by IOM doctors. Interested participants also availed of free testing for hepatitis B and C.

The event is part of the Embassy’s continuing Gender and Development (GAD) initiative, which seeks to promote and mainstream gender equality and women’s empowerment. END
