14 October 2013 – A back-to-back book launch and case discussion on the Philippine economy was held at the Gallery Lobby of the Philippine Center last October 09, as part of the month-long celebrations of Filipino-American Heritage Month in New York.
Consul General Mario L. De Leon, Jr. was present in the event which was attended by scholars, literary enthusiasts, economics students, and members of the business and Filipino community. In his remarks, Consul General De Leon acknowledged the accomplishments of the writers and co-hosts of the event, and how the works being featured reflect the current socio-political and economic issues in the Philippines.
Ms Marivi Soliven, author of the Palanca Award-winning novel, “The Mango Bride,” read excepts of the tongue-in-cheek fictional novel about the interwoven lives of two Filipina immigrants to the United States, one of whom was a mail-order bride. Consul General De Leon noted that the topic of her book is very much a reality in the jurisdiction of the Consulate.
Ms. Carol Dominguez and Mr. Tully Moss presented their case study entitled, “The Republic of the Philippines: The Next Asian Tiger?” published in the Harvard Business School in August 2013. The study looks at the challenges and opportunities confronting the Philippines and the foundations which must be laid to ensure macro- and micro-economic development. Mr Tully Moss entertained questions from the very engaged audience such as the foreigner’s perception of transparency of the government, and the impact of international issues to the economy of the Philippines.
The Filipino-American Heritage Month is celebrated in October by Filipino communities all over the United States and this year honors immigrant workers with the theme "Hands That Built America: Filipino Americans in the Labor Movement." END
