25 August 2016— The Philippine Embassy Assistance-to-Nationals team, along with the Office of the Philippine Honorary Consul in Maldives’ team, met the officials of the Maldives’ Employment Tribunal on August 11 to discuss the range of services the tribunal offers to foreign workers, including Filipinos, in the Maldives.

The meeting marks the first time that Officials of the Tribunal have engaged representatives of the Philippine Government. Among the topics discussed were the types of complaints that could be lodged at the tribunal as well as the types of cases involving foreign workers that the Tribunal has handled in the past. The Tribunal also welcomed the possibility of people-to-people exchanges and coordination on matters involving migrant worker rights.

The Employment Tribunal in Maldives was established on 2008 to protect the rights of both local and foreign workers in Maldives. The Office is a separate entity from the Maldives’ Labor Ministry and its members are appointed by the President of Maldives. END
