22 September 2016 — The Filipino-American Community led by Honorary Consul Audie De Castro welcomed Consul General Adelio Angelito S. Cruz to San Diego, California with a reception at the Cora Anderson Dance Studio on September 10.
Various community leaders representing major Filipino-American organizations attended the event. Members of U.S. Congress and local government officials who were also present included U.S. Representative Scott Peters of the 52nd District, San Diego County Supervisor Dave Roberts, Ms. Joyce Temporal Deputy Director of the Office of Senator Marty Block of the 39th Senate District, and a representative of Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzales of the 80th District. They conveyed their greetings, proclamations and certificates to Consul General Cruz.
In a separate meeting, Consul General Cruz expressed appreciation to Representative Scott Peters for supporting issues that are of importance to the Filipino-American community such as joining the US-PH Friendship Caucus and H.R. 2737, The Filipino Veterans of World War II Congressional Gold Medal Act. San Diego County Supervisor Dave Roberts, Mayor Ron Morrison of National City and San Diego City Council Member Chris Cate were also present during the meeting to welcome the Consul General. Mayor Morrison introduced the various services available to residents of National City such as Senior Centers, transportation services for the elderly, and informational breakfast meetings for his constituents.
During the Filipino community reception, Consul General Cruz thanked the community for their warm welcome. The Consul General discussed the Consulate’s continuous efforts in improving its consular services and strengthening collaboration with Honorary Consul De Castro and the Filipino community organizations in San Diego. The Consul General also shared that he will make an effort to encourage more Filipino community events in San Diego. Consul General Cruz also confirmed his attendance to the flag-raising ceremony in front of the House of the Philippines at Balboa Park.
The San Diego Filipino-American community conveyed its continued efforts to show the strong and prevalent “bayanihan” spirit in their area as well as its cooperation, support and solidarity with the Consulate in the latter’s programs and activities promoting the Philippines and improving the welfare of the Filipino-American community in San Diego, California.
