23 September 2016 — Up-and-coming Filipino brand ALOYSIUS proudly represented the country when it made its debut at the New York Fashion Week at the Philippine Center in Manhattan on September 12.
The 14-piece debut collection featured Creative Director Joseph Aloysius’ work, highlighting his signature style of stunning textures and silhouettes showcasing the calado lace, a centuries-old, purely Filipino hand embroidery technique done over handwoven piña (pineapple fabric).
Co-hosted by the Philippine Consulate General, GMA TV, and Philippine Airlines, the event attracted a full house, with Filipinos and foreign nationals from the fashion industry, media, business, diplomatic corps, and socialites among the audience. Philippine Consul General Mario De Leon, Jr. remarked, “We are proud to support ALOYSIUS and bring a truly Filipiniana brand with its indigenous craft and materials, beautifully utilized in Joseph’s designs.”
Calado lace embroidery is an ultimate Filipino fashion skill. However, the craft which is native to the Heritage town of Taal, Batangas, is a dying art form. ALOYSIUS’ aims to revive and reinvigorate this ancestral craft by raising funds to install calado hand embroidery elective subjects in public schools nationwide and produce workshops for private sectors worldwide. The company has pledged a percentage of all its ALOYSIUS Calado clothing sales as well as into realizing its goal.
ALOYSIUS will be exhibiting its full collection at the Lobby Gallery of the Philippine Center from October 03 to 07 and will be participating in the New York International Bridal Show at The Piers in Chelsea on October 08 to 10. END
