11 October 2013 – Philippine Ambassador to Portugal Philippe J. Lhuillier Lisbon received and congratulated Dr. Nestor Michael C. Tiglao for successfully completing his doctorate degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Instituto Superior Tecnico in Lisbon on October 11.
Dr. Tiglao’s doctorate program was made possible through a grant provided by the Department of Science of Technology (DOST) through the Engineering Research and Development for Technology (ERDT) Program and in part by the Fundagao para a Ciencia e Tecnologia (FCT). He conducted his research at the Communication Networks and Mobility Group at INESC-ID Lisboa.
"We are proud of him and I hope Nestor’s achievement will inspire and encourage more Filipinos to study here and avail of some of the excellent academic programs in Portuguese universities, particularly in technical fields such as electrical engineering," Ambassador Lhuiller said.
Ambassador Lhuillier also noted that the Philippine Embassy in Lisbon will be looking to help develop linkages between Philippine and Portuguese universities and other relevant institutions such as DOST, so as to develop opportunities for academic and technical exchanges that would mutually benefit both countries and its peoples.
Dr. Tiglao is the first Filipino to obtain a doctor of philosophy (PhD) degree in Portugal after successfully completing his thesis on “Cross-Layer Optimization for Caching-Based Transport Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks” on October 08.
In addition to his doctorate degree from the Instituto Superior Tecnico of Lisbon, Dr. Tiglao completed both his Master of Science and Bachelor of Science degrees in Electrical Engineering at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City in 2005 and 1995, respectively. He is currently serving as faculty member at the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Institute of University of the Philippines Diliman. END
