26 September 2016 –The Philippine Embassy in Canberra organized a talk by Dr. Vincent Daria on Developing New Technologies to Understand a Working (and Failing) Brain at the Embassy Conference Room in commemoration of the 12th Cerebral Palsy Awareness and Protection Week from September 16 to 22.

Dr. Vincent Daria is a Filipino physicist and Fellow at the Eccles Institute of Neuroscience of the Australian National University (ANU). 

More than 40 people from the Filipino-Australian community attended the talk.

Cerebral palsy is a neurological disorder that appears in infancy or early childhood and permanently affects body movement and muscle coordination. It is caused by damage to or abnormalities inside the developing brain. Dr. Daria explained the types of cerebral palsy and areas of brain damage involved. Dr. Daria also introduced his team’s research on neurophotonics which uses new technology to understand the brain. 

Dr. Daria obtained his Doctor of Engineering in Applied Physics from Osaka University and his Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics from the University of the Philippines, Diliman.

He has 49 peer-reviewed journals and has been the chief investigator for several research projects in Australia.

He received twice the Gawad Chancellor award from the University of the Philippines, Diliman and the Outstanding Young Scientist Award for Applies Physics from the National Academy of Science and Technology. END
