10 October 2016 — The City of Carson held a wreath-laying ceremony at the Dr. Jose Rizal Monument located at the International Sculpture Garden on October 01 signifying the start of a month long celebration of Philippine American History Month in Carson, California.
A short program followed at the Carson Community Center, where the City Council presented certificates to Filipino Americans including Mr. Ralph Quinte, Dr. Jenny Batongmalaque, Mr. Ildefonso Quibin, Mr. Kristian Benjamin Tang, Mr. Kurt Delicana and Ms. Michelle Thorlund for their achievements and contributions to the community.
In his remarks, Philippine Consul General to Los Angeles Adelio Angelito Cruz congratulated the Filipino Americans recognized by the City Council for being the movers and shakers such as Larry Itliong who was a leader and a beacon of unity and inspiration to all Filipinos in the US.
The Consul General was also happy to see the Dr. Jose Rizal monument in California. The annual celebration of Filipino American History month serves as a reminder of the rich history of the Filipino American community and how the community has grown and gone a long way from October 1587, when the first “Luzones Indios” arrived in Morro Bay.
