08 November 2016 – The Philippine Embassy-Filipino Community Teams in the Kingdom of Bahrain emerged as Champions in the 1st ASEAN Table Tennis Tournament held on November 04 at the National Stadium, Isa Town, Kingdom of Bahrain.

Organized by the Indonesian Embassy, a total of 64 players from the ASEAN Communities of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines in Bahrain participated in the tournament.

Team Philippines dominated the events, winning 1st and 2nd places both in the Women’s Singles and Doubles Categories and 1st place in the Men’s Doubles Category. In the Men’s Singles Category, which was won by Malaysia, the Philippines won 2nd and 3rd places.

The Table Tennis event is part of the series “ASEAN Games 2016” played between and among the five ASEAN member states that have missions in the Kingdom. Last month, the PHL Embassy hosted the 1st ASEAN Communities Badminton Tournament and also took the overall Championship. The other sporting events to be held are Volleyball and Football tentatively scheduled in November and December 2016, respectively.

The entire ASEAN Games 2016 is under the patronage of H.E. Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Bahrain. Dr. Dhafer Ahmed Al Umran from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs graced the event as the tournament’s guest of honor. END
