24 October 2013 – The Philippine Consulate General attended the performances of Mga Anak ni Inang Daigdig (MAID), a children’s dance troupe from Smokey Mountain, Tondo, Philippines, held at the Filipino-American Community in Los Angeles on October 18.
In commemoration of the Filipino-American Heritage Month, the Filipino-American Community in Los Angeles (FACLA) in collaboration with Movement to End Rape and Other Child Abuses (MOTHER), presented the “Dance of the Poorest, Dance For the Forest” featuring the MAID Smokey Mountain Children’s Dance Troupe.
Mga Anak ni Inang Daigdig (Children of Mother Earth) is an environmental performing arts group featuring children ages 12 to 18 yrs. old, born and raised in Smokey Mountain, formerly the 3rd largest untreated dumpsite in the World. The group was founded in 1993 by Fr. Benigno P. Beltran as Mga Lingkod ni Inang Kalikasan. They were initially trained under the Philippine-ITI Earthsavers Dreams Academy and later under the tutelage of the late Philippine National Artist for Dance, Ramon Obusan.
Their message is to preserve the environment conveyed through songs and dances.
