15 December 2016 – Philippine Consul General to New York Theresa Dizon-De Vega met with Mexican Consul General Diego Gomez Pickering to discuss ways of promoting closer linkages between the Filipino and Mexican communities in the US Tri-state area.
Both Consuls General acknowledged the close historical ties between the Philippines and Mexico, which date back to the Spanish Colonial period during the Philippines was administered by Spain through the Viceroyalty of New Spain (Mexico).
In view of the many sociocultural encounters between the two countries, Consuls General De Vega and Gomez agreed to explore possible activities to promote stronger linkages between their communities.
They also discussed common concerns of their respective countries in the United States including migration issues, labor policies, and international trade.
Consul General De Vega noted that Mexico has a significant investment presence in the Philippines and that economic ties are becoming more active due in part to renewed interest in Latin America in economic exchanges with the Asia-Pacific Region and vice versa. END
