05 January 2017 — Consul General Bernardita L. Catalla led the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong SAR during the commemoration of Jose Rizal’s 120th Death Anniversary through a wreath laying ceremony at Rednaxela Terrace and D’Aguilar Street on December 30, 2016.
Rizal and his family lived at Rednaxela Terrace when he was practicing medicine in Hong Kong between 1891 and 1892. His clinic was located at D’Aguilar Street in Central Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong Antiquities Authority placed markers at the said location to honor the area’s historical significance.
Consul General Catalla recognized Rizal as a Renaissance man in her remarks.
Rizal was a nationalist, a medical doctor; a natural scientist — having discovered species of a beetle (Apogania rizali), a lizard (Draco rizali) and a frog (Rhacophorus rizali); a painter; a poet; and an engineer. Rizal directed the building of a water system made of bamboo while he was exiled in Dapitan.
Members of the Knights of Rizal-Hong Kong Chapter and Lakbay Dangal, a Filipino community organization promoting Philippine history and heritage in Hong Kong, attended the event. END
