12 January 2017- Philippine Ambassador to Myanmar Alex G. Chua paid separate courtesy calls on the Speaker of Pyithu Hluttaw (Lower House) U Win Myint and Speaker of Amyotha Hluttaw (Upper House) U Mahn Win Khaing Than in Nay Pyi Taw on January 06.
Ambassador Chua thanked the Myanmar parliament for hosting the Philippine delegation to the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) Meeting in 2016. He asked for Myanmar’s support for the Philippines’ hosting of the AIPA Meeting this year.
The Philippines will host the AIPA Meeting during its Chairmanship of the ASEAN this year. In 2016, the Myanmar Parliament established the Philippines-Myanmar Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Association to strengthen the relations between the two countries’ parliaments.
The Ambassador expressed hope for meaningful exchanges between the two countries’ parliaments not only through AIPA but also through the Philippines-Myanmar Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Association.
Speaker of Pyithu Hluttaw (Lower House) U Win Myint said Myanmar has a lot to learn from the Philippines, particularly in crafting legislations to support reforms in Myanmar. He thanked the Philippines for supporting Myanmar’s hosting of AIPA in 2016 and expressed hope to visit the Philippines for the 2017 AIPA Meeting.
Speaker of Amyotha Hluttaw (Upper House) U Mahn Win Khaing Than congratulated the Philippines for assuming the Chairmanship of the 50th ASEAN summit.
He expressed hope that relations between the countries’ parliaments will be strengthened through AIPA and the Philippines-Myanmar Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Association. According to him, association can exchange information to promote the enhancement of trade and investment relations between the two countries. END
