31 October 2013 – The Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur said some 350 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) received and completed skills training courses at the Embassy’s Migrant Workers and Other Filipinos Resource Center (MWOFRC).

The graduates received their certificates of completion from Philippine Ambassador to Malaysia J. Eduardo Malaya and Labor Attaché Dr. Alicia Santos during graduation ceremonies held on October 27 at the Saloma Restaurant. 

The skills training courses included automotive, culinary arts, baking, basic nursing and homecare,  
reflexology, dressmaking, kempo martial arts, accounting, computer programming and processing and hairdressing and cosmetology. 

Outstanding graduates also received medals to mark their accomplishments.

In his inspirational talk, Ambassador Malaya highlighted the importance of improving one’s knowledge and skills for personal and professional growth. 

“The Center’s skills training program is akin to the concept of continuing education, in order for our OFWs to continually upgrade their skills and improve their lives.  Education should be a never-ending journey,” he said.

Ambassador Malaya also thanked the MWOFRC resource persons for giving their time, effort, dedication, patriotism and love for continuing education, as well as the Center’s sponsors, benefactors and supporters, notably the LBC Mabuhay Sdn Bhd.

He especially lauded the Filipino Workers Resource Center (FWRC) Council of Leaders, headed by its President, Amalia Liza Francisco, which helps in running the Center’s skills training programs.

 According to Labor Attaché Santos, Kuala Lumpur’s MWOFRC is one of the few centers which functions more as a skills training center than a halfway house for distressed Filipinos.  The MWOFRC in KL reputedly offers the most comprehensive range of skill courses on a yearly basis.

“Our MWOFRC is a source of pride for us because it not only provides temporary shelter to our distressed nationals, but is a learning center where our OFWs can further develop themselves and in essence, their families,” she said.

The Embassy’s MWOFRC is housed in a six-room building, with a floor area of 370 square meters situated in a 650-meter property.  There are also three modular classrooms for different training courses constructed outside the main building.  END
