30 January 2017 - Philippine Consul General Gina Jamoralin and the Consulate General’s ATN Officer Rodel Tejada visited the Honolulu Fish Auction on January 20 to observe and understand how Hawaii’s fish industry is managed in terms of quality, safety and sustainability.

Pastor Jerry Saludez and Honolulu City Councilmember Joey Manahan and his staff accompanied them.

Mr. John Kaneko, Program Manager of the Hawaii Seafood Council explained how and what type of fish are caught and the process of handling the fish to preserve its quality, from the fishing vessels to the auction area where the buyers select the best catch of fish and ultimately selling the fish to restaurants and retail markets in Hawaii and the US Mainland.

According to Kaneko, yellow fin tuna and swordfish are the most common varieties of fish that are being caught.

The American fishing vessels have primarily foreign crewmen, including Filipino fishermen. END
