10 February 2017 SINGAPORE – A delegation from the House of Representatives visited Singapore from February 02 to 03 to study the country’s efficient energy and waste management systems in line with ongoing legislative initiatives to enable the Philippines to adopt the region’s best practices.
Tarlac 1st District Representative Carlos O. Cojuangco led a delegation composed of Aklan Lone District Representative Carlito S. Marquez, Nueva Ecija 1st District Representative Estrellita B. Suansing, Sultan Kudarat 2nd District Representative Horacio P. Suansing, Jr., AKO-BICOL Party List Representative Rodel M. Batocabe, and Mr. Jess R. Marquez, Chief of Staff of Rep. Marquez.
The delegation was briefed on on Singapore’s solid waste management and operations of the Tuas South Incineration Plant (TSIP), as well as a tour of the plant. TSIP is a government-owned incineration plant involved in waste minimization, recycling, conversion of waste to energy, and reducing waste to landfill.
A meeting with officials of Keppel, Singapore’s private sector partner in its waste-to-energy infrastructure, followed the briefing.
The delegation also visited the Energy Market Authority, an agency under the Ministry of Trade & Industry similar to the Philippines’ Energy Regulatory Commission for a briefing on Singapore’s clean energy policy.
The study tour capped off with a meeting with Veolia Materials Recovery Facility, a French multinational company involved in waste management and recycling, and a brief tour of their facility.
The study visit is a follow-up to previous similar activities conducted in Japan and South Korea to gather best practices in the region and explore their applicability in the Philippine context.END
