23 March 2017 NEW YORK – Comedienne Ai-Ai delas Alas bagged the Best Female Actor Award for her lead role in the film, “Area” during the 7th Queen’s World Film Festival at the New York Museum of the Moving Image and the Kaufman Theater.

“Area” won a Special Jury Prize at the Eurasia International Film Festival in Almaty, Kazakhstan in 2016 and is   slated for the 41st Cleveland International Film Festival from March 29 to April 02 and at the 15th Boston International Film Festival from April 13 to 17.

“Area” is directed by Louie Ignacio and is about ageing female prostitutes coping with a slew of societal and economic challenges.  The film is one of 130 entries worldwide.

The Queen’s Film Festival aims to champion cinematic masterpieces from around the world as a way to highlight the racially diverse milieu of the Borough of Queens, which is one of the most racially diverse places in the US.

Consulate General in New York Theresa Dizon-De Vega congratulated Mr. Ignacio for the accolades garnered by his film.  Mr. Ignacio lauded the Consulate General’s efforts to promote Philippine cinema in the US, such as the annual “Sinehan sa Summer” held at the Philippine Center. END
