Emirates Red Crescent Turns Over Health Facilities in Samar for Typhoon Haiyan Victims, Constructs Secondary School in Taguig

30 March 2017 – Emirates Red Crescent (ERC), headed by Secretary-General Dr. Mohamed Ateeq Al Falahi successfully concluded and turned over on March 10, 2017.  Renovation of Samar Provincial Hospital and donation of medical equipment and the construction and furnishing of a Community Health facility in Dolores, Samar. Both ERC projects are for victims of Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in the Province of Samar.

The general hospital was rehabilitated, reconstructed, and equipped with modern medical equipment by the ERC to serve an estimated 350,000 people in the province. The Dolores Community Health Clinic, on the other hand, was a joint project of the ERC, the Philippine Red Cross (PRC), the Department of Health (DOH) and Dolores Local Government Unit (LGU) to serve an estimated 124,000 people.

“I wish to express my deep appreciation on the continuing support of the UAE, through the Emirates Red Crescent, to the victims of Typhoon Haiyan as they continue to rehabilitate their communities and rebuild their lives,” says Philippine Ambassador to the UAE Constancio R. Vingno, Jr.

On March 11, 2017, a ground breaking ceremony was held in Barangay Maharlika, Taguig for the Secondary School construction project of ERC in cooperation with the City Government of Taguig. From 2014 to 2015, ERC also rebuilt 18 schools in Eastern Samar destroyed by Typhoon Haiyan at a cost of AED 27 million to accommodate 9,828 students in 102 classrooms, 15 indoor playgrounds, 12 auditoriums.

The ERC’s humanitarian, developmental, and reconstruction projects are based on UAE President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s pledge to support the victims of Typhoon Haiyan.

His Highness Sheikh Hamdam bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE President’s representative in the Western Region and President of the ERC, said that the UAE will continue to launch and implement more humanitarian and developmental projects during the UAE’s Year of Giving 2017. END
