31 March 2017 — Philippine Consul General to Chicago Generoso D.G. Calonge welcomed members of the Alliance of Filipinos for Immigrant Rights and Empowerment (AFIRE) Chicago at the Kalayaan Hall of the Philippine Consulate General in Chicago on March 29 for a dialogue on their concerns and advocacies.
AFIRE members and Consulate General officials shared their views and concerns on the new executive issuances on immigration and promotion of the Illinois Domestic Workers’ Bill of Rights that took effect early this year. Consul General Calonge discussed how the Consulate General responds and extends assistance in cases that may involve Filipino nationals, in accordance with its mandate and with respect to relevant laws.
In order to reach and educate a wider audience in the Filipino community on the issues of immigration and rights of domestic workers, the Consulate General will combine efforts with AFIRE through town hall meetings and other modes of cooperation with the support of other like-minded groups in civil society and legal community.
