11 April 2017 TORONTO, CANADA — Officials of the Insurance Commission (IC), led by Deputy Commissioner Dorothy Calimag, and officials from the Center for Agriculture and Rural Development-Mutually Reinforcing Institutions (CARD-MRI spearheaded by Ramon Magsaysay awardee Dr. Jaime Aristotle Alip), RIMANSI and Canadian Co-operative Association (CCA) paid a courtesy call to Consul General Rosalita Prospero on March 27.
The officials are on a study mission in Canada to look into the regulatory insurance models that have supported the growth and development of the Canadian insurance industry, and met with some of their counterparts in the Canadian insurance industry.
CARD MRI and RIMANSI implemented a project called “Project on Rebuilding through Micro-insurance and Women’s Micro-enterprises (PREMIUM)” with the assistance of Global Affairs Canada and Co-operative Development Foundation of Canada. PREMIUM assisted victims of the 2013 Typhoon Haiyan in Leyte and Samar by providing micro-entrepreneurs, mostly women, with the skills to successfully manage and operate their businesses and become more resilient in times of disaster through the purchase of micro-insurance products. About 1,600 families benefited from this project.
Consul General Prospero and the insurance officials discussed, among other issues, the micro-insurance sector of the Philippines and its role in poverty alleviation, insurance products or services to assist calamity victims, assistance provided by CARD, Inc. to its members during the 2013 Typhoon Haiyan, recognition of the Philippines as a leader in micro-insurance in the ASEAN region, insurance products and services for OFWs andthe possibility of incorporation micro-insurance education at the elementary level.
