13 November 2013 - Senator Loren Legarda, head of the Philippine Delegation to the 37th Session of the UNESCO General Conference, met with UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova in Paris on November 8. Joining her in the meeting were Ambassador and Permanent Delegate Cristina Ortega, Commission on Higher Education Chairperson Dr. Patricia Licuanan and UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines, Secretary General Dr. Virginia Miralao.
In their discussions, the Senator highlighted the Philippines’ priorities and programs, especially those that are related to UNESCO’s work. Among others, the Senator mentioned Philippine interest in culture and development, world heritage and intangible heritage preservation, as well as disaster risk reduction and meeting the challenges of natural calamities.
On her part, the Director General commended the Philippines for its work in advancing education and she cited the country’s huge potential to develop creative industries because of the richness of its culture and traditions.
During the meeting, Senator Legarda presented the Director General with a copy of the book “Philippines: Archipel des Echanges” which is a catalogue of the Philippine cultural objects and artworks featured in the exhibition held between April to July 2013 at the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris. END
