17 May 2017 TORONTO — The Philippine Consulate General in Toronto participated in the “Proudly Pinoy Day” organized by the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) on May 13 at the St. Margaret Beatrice Campus/Dante Alighieri Academy in celebration of the Asian Heritage Month. In this year’s commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Canada’s Confederation, Asian Heritage Month is more important than ever as it recognizes and highlights the culture and heritage of Asian countries like the Philippines, one of the top source of Canadian immigrants and migrant workers for several years.
The Proudly Pinoy Day’s organizers, headed by Ms. Jodelyn Huang, TCDSB’s Community Relations Officer, kicked off the event with engaging activities and sessions relevant to typical Filipino character, tradition and values. The event’s seminar-workshops for students, parents, and teachers, Filipino cuisines, cultural performances, information and display booths, and inspirational talks of prominent Filipino and Canadian community leaders and resource speakers were well-attended by parents, students and staff from elementary and secondary schools within the Toronto Catholic District School Board and other suburban schools. Consul Edna May G. Lazaro and Cultural Officer Janet L. Hizon of PHL Consulate General in Toronto participated in one of the workshops conducted by University of Toronto students.
The Filipino community is proud to be a part of Toronto’s cultural diversity, where each and every community plays a part in enhancing the social and cultural landscape of the larger Canadian community.
