09 June 2017 ABU DHABI - Philippine Permanent Representative to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Ambassador Constancio R. Vingno, Jr. attended the thirteenth Meeting of the Council of IRENA held last May 23 to 24 at Sheraton Hotel, Corniche, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates where the Philippines was appointed as one of the eight members of the Programme and Strategy Committee (PSC).
IRENA Director-General Adnan Z. Amin welcomed more than 300 delegates from 110 countries and presented the progress report on the implementation of the Work Programme and Budget 2016-2017 and highlighted the achievements made by the Agency over the past years.
The Council Meeting delivered on IRENA’s Preliminary Framework for the Work Programme and Budget 2018-2019, Draft Framework for the Medium-term Strategy 2018-2022, and Programmatic Themes such as Investment needs for a low-carbon energy system, Renewable Energy and Jobs-annual Review 2017, and Adapting electricity market design to high shares of variable renewable energy. IRENA Members also tackled institutional and administrative matters, and arrangements for the fourteenth meeting of the Council in November 2017.
During the Philippines’ intervention at IRENA Policy Day on May 25, DOE Assistant Director Cerezo thanked IRENA for the timely launching of Philippines’ Renewables Readiness Assessment (RRA) last March 2017. Assistant Director Cerezo highlighted the country’s 7.4 GW installations composed of 1.96GW geothermal, 3.6GW hydropower, 427MW wind power, 460MW biomass, and 899MW solar power.
