14 June 2017 GENEVA, SWITZERLAND — The 141st meeting of the Executive Board of the World Health Organization (WHO) convened today for the second time this year, closing out the 9-day Health Assembly with a two-day gathering of the 34 members of the Executive Board, of which the Philippines is a member.
The agenda includes technical matters including the eradication of malaria, and the prevention, control and elimination of rheumatic heart disease. Governance reform, and an evaluation of the procedure followed for the election of the Director-General, are among the management matters that are also under discussion.
Assistant Secretary Agnette Peralta of the Philippine Department of Health leads the Delegation, representing the Secretary of Health Paulyn Rosell-Ubial, in the Board.
The Executive Board of the WHO is composed of Member States from all six WHO-regions, whose central function is to "give effect to the decisions and policies of the Health Assembly, to advise it and generally to facilitate its work." The Board is the executive organ of the Health Assembly and acts as its adviser. It also has the mandate to take emergency measures to deal with events requiring immediate action. The Philippines term in the Executive Board ends in 2018.
