Puerto Galera Biosphere Reserve
11 June 2017 – Ambassador Ma. Theresa Lazaro, Permanent Delegate of the Philippines to UNESCO, reported that the International Co-ordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB) reconfirmed the status of Puerto Galera as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve during the 29th Session of the Council held on 12-15 June 2017 at UNESCO Headquarters.
Puerto Galera was among the 270 biosphere reserves under scrutiny of the MAB “Exit Strategy” for the past years. Following submission of updated reports, Puerto Galera has been deemed to meet relevant criteria and remains in the World Network of UNESCO Biosphere Reserves.
UNESCO Biosphere Reserves are internationally recognized as models of sustainable development, which provide “living observatories” for implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and the Paris Agreement on climate change. UNESCO Biosphere Reserves of the Philippines also include the provinces of Palawan and Albay.
