25 July 2017 – On the occasion of Philippine Ambassador Eduardo Jose A. de Vega’s official visit to Nicaragua from July 07 to 08, he met on various occasions with members of the local Filipino community, who expressed their solidarity with the Filipino nation and their full support for the leadership of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte. They further indicated that they were happy working and living in Nicaragua.

This support expressed by the Filipino community in Nicaragua for the government of President Duterte follows a similar manifestation of support expressed by the Filipino community in neighboring Costa Rica when Ambassador de Vega visited last April.

The Ambassador was in Nicaragua to present his credentials accrediting him as non-resident Philippine Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Denis Ronaldo Moncada Colindres. He also discussed bilateral issues with local officials, including Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Arlette Marenco Meza.

During the talks, Ambassador de Vega recalled the Philippine initiative to host the Conference of Newly-Restored Democracies in Manila in 1988, where the Philippines invited Nicaragua to join despite opposition from the US. The follow-up convention on the same agenda was held in Managua, Nicaragua in 1994. He also took the opportunity to explain President Duterte’s anti-drug initiative and the new foreign policy track of the Philippine government.

Nicaraguan officials emphasized their country’s independent foreign policy and their respect of the principle of sovereignty and non-interference in the domestic affairs of other nations. They lauded the current Philippine government for its similar foreign policy approach.

They also conveyed their sympathies for those who died of the earthquake that struck Ormoc, Leyte on July 06.
