31 July 2017 NEW YORK — The Philippine Consulate General in New York held last Tuesday, July 25, its annual Mabini Session at the Kalayaan Hall of the Philippine Center in New York.
In honor of the Philippine chairmanship of the ASEAN this year, the event featured the topic ASEAN@50. Featured speakers for the night were retired Philippine Ambassador Leslie Gatan, and Ateneo Law School professor and ASEAN law practitioner Atty. Aris Gulapa.
Ambassador Gatan discussed the background and history of ASEAN, delving into the relationships among the founding economies and the subsequent member-states that joined the association later. Atty. Gulapa, for his part discussed the concept of the ASEAN Economic Community, what its vision is and what it aims to accomplish in the short and medium-term. A short but interesting discussion was held after the presentations, with audience members asking very keen questions relating to the subject matter.
