Philippines Co-Hosts Exhibit on Family Farming
08 August 2017 NEW YORK – The Philippines is co-hosting a photo exhibit on Family Farming at UN Headquarters New York from July 25 to 29 last to drum up support and awareness for the initiative to declare a UN Decade of Family Farming.
The exhibit, which opened on July 25, showcases photographs that reflect family farming in different regions around the world. Aside from the Philippines the other country co-hosts are Angola, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Ethiopia, France, Indonesia, Italy, Mexico, Philippines, Spain, Thailand, and Uruguay.
Known as the UN Core Group on Family Farming, they are working with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to have a UN General Assembly Resolution declaring 2019-2029 as the UN Decade of Family Farming. They note that family farming produces between 70-80% of food globally, playing a crucial role in eliminating poverty and rural development.
In 2014, the Philippines spearheaded the UN Declaration of the International Year of Family Farming (IFF) and chaired the International Steering Committee (ISC) in Rome that coordinated the implementation of IYFF 2014. The outcomes of the IYFF is one of the springboards for the campaign for the UN Decade of Family Farming.
