PHL Consulate General Participates in 24th Annual Pistahan Parade and Festival in San Francisco
29 August 2017 SAN FRANCISCO — The 24th Annual Pistahan Parade and Festival, the largest Filipino-American celebration in the United States, was successfully held from August 12 and 13 at the Yerba Buena Gardens and the Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco’s personnel and their families participated in the parade, which began at the Civic Center and ended at Yerba Buena Gardens. Clad in blue Kalayaan shirts and red bandanas, the delegation marched down Mission Street to Original Pilipino Music and simple choreography.
This year’s Hermano and Hermana Mayor were Deputy Consul General Jaime Ramon T. Ascalon and Mrs. Cecile G. Ascalon, who joined the opening festivities of Pistahan. The Deputy Consul General thanked the parade’s contingents for supporting the event despite the downcast weather, and congratulated Filipino Arts and Events (FAAE) and its loyal and energetic group of volunteers for making the 24th Parade and Festival even more successful than that of the previous year.
This year’s theme was “Pride and Progress in SOMA Pilipinas”, a nod to the City of San Francisco carving out a section of South of Market as SOMA Pilipinas, a cultural district that celebrates the contributions of the Filipino-American Community to the City.
The Consulate availed of a booth during the two-day festival at the Garden, promoting the Consulate’s services, overseas voter registration, and tourism destinations in the Philippines.
The two-day event attracted over 80,000 people throughout the Bay Area, which showcased Filipino talents, food, arts, innovation, dance and health pavilions. The event culminated in TFC Hour, with Inigo Pascual and Sam Milby headlining the concert.
