PHL Consulate General in Chicago Renews MOU with EEOC
Philippine Consul General to Chicago Generoso D.G. Calonge and Director Julianne Bowman of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) renewing their respective offices’ working agreement from 2017 to 2019.
31 August 2017 CHICAGO – The Philippine Consulate General in Chicago and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) Chicago District Office signed the Memorandum of Understanding that extends their collaborative partnership for two more years last August 25.
Consul General Generoso D.G. Calonge stressed the need for continued efforts for Filipinos in the Consulate General’s jurisdiction to increase their awareness and appreciation of their rights against discrimination in the process of hiring and during their term of employment.
Director Julianne Bowman viewed with immense importance the partnership with the Consulate General in educating both workers and employers or business owners about their rights and obligations under pertinent provisions of the Civil Rights Act and other federal laws.
The EEOC exists, she said, to protect people who are treated differently in the workplace because of their sex, race, color, national origin and religion, as well as their age, pregnancy or disability and genetic information. She further mentioned that, through the EEOC’s collaboration with the Consulate General, they had been able to reach out to the Filipino communities in different states.
From 2015 to 2017, the EEOC participated in 12 consular outreach services held in eight states within the jurisdiction of the Consulate General, which both Director Bowman and Consul General Calonge hope to sustain and expand in the next two years.
The signing ceremony heralded the observance of the Labor Rights Week in the U.S. by the Consulate General in cooperation with its federal government partners.
