PHL Consul General Meets with Mayor of Newport, Rhode Island

31 August 2017 NEW YORK CITY - Consul General Theresa Dizon-de Vega met with Mayor Henry F. Winthrop at the City Hall of Newport City, Rhode Island on 24 August 2017.

Consul General Dizon-De Vega noted the success of Newport City as a booming tourism destination in Rhode Island which is home to an estimated 4,000 Filipino-Americans and thanked the mayor for the support for the growing Filipino-American community in the area.

Mayor Winthrop expressed appreciation for the visit of the Consul General and cited the contributions of Filipino-Americans to the growth of Newport and other cities in Rhode Island especially in promoting cultural diversity in the city and the State.

Consul General Dizon-de Vega and Mayor Winthrop agreed to work together to explore the possibility of forging a twinning agreement between Newport and a city in the Philippines. A twin city agreement is expected to promote tourism, cultural and economic exchanges between the two cities.

The Consul General also invited Mayor Winthrop to visit the Philippines in his next trip to Asia next year either as a standalone visit or as part of the annual US Ambassadors’ Tour.
